LTE - next step in the evolution of mobile telephony

Report on LTE which is called a system of almost fourth generation (3.9G). LTE is a transitional system to 4G, a successor of UMTS/HSPA on the way to full switch to packet traffic based on Internet Protocol.

The telecommunications market is currently subject to swift evolution with a much faster pace than several years ago. The reason for this is not only better access to knowledge or growing user demands but also the need for each service provider to have competitive and interesting offers in its portfolio.

The liberalisation of the telecommunications market causes that in practice everyone who wishes so can become a telecommunications provider. This in turn leads to the approximation of supply and demand: more precise demands of users can be better matched by service providers. At present, it is not enough to have a mobile and Internet access. Comfort and entertainment along with health and education are becoming more and more important while these walks of life are in turn more and more linked to electronic communications. More and more people feel the need to be "on-line" all the time because of enhanced possibilities offered by the Internet.

With network access we can work, relax, communicate with our acquaintances during video conferences, use VOIP, study, manage our bank account, do shopping, share holiday pictures, listen to the radio, watch films and TV transmissions or play games with our friends. Since the Polish infrastructure in the form of fixed-line networks was not well developed by the former monopolist, and people tend to spend more and more time in motion - mobile access to services, including Internet, is becoming more and more popular way for communicating, seeking information or entertainment. In order to go forward in this direction, new mobile technologies are being devised offering greater efficiency, better quality and greater number of services to be offered.

The document published presents briefly the development of mobile telephony starting with GSM, through UMTS and ending with LTE technology as the main point of focus. It describes the qualities and potential of this technology as well as operators' plans towards this system. The purpose of the document is also to make one aware of the role to be played by LTE in the near future.
