Participation of the President of UKE in the World Summit on Information Society Forum 2016

The World Summit on Information Society Forum 2016 (WSIS Forum 2016) is being held on 2-6 May in Geneva with the participation of the delegation of the Office of Electronic Communications headed by its President, Magdalena Gaj.


During this year’s edition of the WSIS Forum titled "WSIS Action Lines: Supporting the Implementation of SDGs" the participants search for solutions which will allow for effective joining of projects implemented under particular WSIS Action Lines with the Sustainable Development Goals. This year, the Summit gathered 1800 participants, including high-level representatives of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) member states’ governments, United Nations agencies involved in the WSIS process, private sector, academia and civil society.

Magdalena Gaj, as the Chairman of the last year's edition of the WSIS Forum, was invited to participate in the WSIS Forum 2016 opening session. In her speech she put special emphasis on the importance of the development of telecommunications infrastructure for building  information society, and presented the Polish achievements in this area - ICT infrastructure is the neural network of modern society and economy and no country is able to operate without it. Infrastructural developments should be our key priority - said President Gaj in the speech opening the conference. In addition she noted the increasing dangers connected with everyday use of the information and communication technologies. At the end she underlined the need to bridge the development gaps, especially as regards the existing differences in access to modern technologies between women and men - We need real action, practical solutions that will give women access to the ICTs - urged President Gaj.  

President Magdalena Gaj has also accepted the WSIS Prize awarded to the projects chosen by the international community from the particular WSIS Action Lines. The Polish project which received global recognition in the voting lasting from 6 February to 10 March 2016 turned out to be the Certification Programme of the President of UKE. An integral part of the WSIS Forum is formed by numerous thematic workshops and seminars organised or moderated by the experts from particular countries, as well as international organisations, including UN agencies responsible for the development of information society within the WSIS process. Under this component of the WSIS Forum 2016, the representatives of UKE presented the Polish experience in the scope of consumer protection. They presented the activities and projects aimed at strengthening consumer protection undertaken by the President of UKE.

During the Summit President Gaj held a series of meetings with the representatives of the management of the International Telecommunication Union and regulatory authorities from other countries.
