The President of the Office of Electronic Communications presents the Report on the telecommunications market in Poland in 2014, drawn up on the basis of information provided in the annual reports of telecommunications undertakings, pursuant to Article 7 of the Telecommunications Act.
In 2014, the total value of the telecommunications market amounted to PLN 39.21 billion. It was a successive year noting a decrease in the revenues from telecommunications operations, which was 2.6% compared to the previous year. The largest decrease (12.7%) was noted for fixed-line telephony, but it also affected mobile services. The only segment which saw growth was Internet access.Internet access
In 2014, the value of the Internet market grew by more than 11.5% compared to the previous year. The number of clients using the Internet services also increased. The gap between the number of people using fixed-line access (7.2 million subscribers) and mobile access (almost 6 million) narrowed.
Orange Polska had the largest Internet users database (including both fixed-line and mobile users). The share of that company in the number of subscribers amounted to 29.1% and was lower compared to 2013 by nearly 3 percentage points. The second largest operator in terms of the number of Internet clients was Polkomtel.
Internet access in the speed range from 2 Mb/s to 10 Mb/s was most popular and used by more than 45% of subscribers. Due to rapid development of services requiring high-speed lines the clients tend to choose significantly faster access more and more frequently. In 2014, more than 21.5% had a line capable of connection with speeds in the range from 30 Mb/s to 100 Mb/s.
Huge popularity of mobile Internet made Poland one of the countries with the highest mobile penetration rate in the European Union (5th place). More than 80% of the Polish population had mobile access. This result is by almost 14 percentage points higher than the European average, which was around 66.7%.Mobile telephony
In 2014, operators had in total more than 57.8 million SIM cards registered in their databases, which translated into the penetration of 150.2%. Despite relative saturation of the market with mobile services, the linear growth trend was maintained.
Mobile telephony was still the most important segment of the Polish telecommunications market. In 2014, the revenues from mobile telephony accounted for almost 45% of the total market value. The majority of revenues (81%) was generated by the post-paid customers. However, this did not translate into the customer structure. In 2014, the difference between the number of post-paid users (46%) and pre-paid users (54%) amounted to some 8 percentage points.
In 2014, there was an increase in the number of users by 1.4% compared to the previous year. The largest decline was experienced by mobile operators other than the four leading ones and by MVNO. In 2014, some 1.81 million users, i.e. by 16.8% more than in the previous year, chose to port their numbers to another operator.Fixed-line telephony
As in previous years, in 2014 both the value of the fixed-line market and the number of subscribers dropped down. In contrast, VoIP telephony increased its popularity and the number of users.
The structure of the market in 2014 did not witness any radical changes. In 2014, bundled services generated more than PLN 2 billion in revenue. In total, around 4.2 million people in Poland used those services.
The most popular package in 2014 was fixed-line Internet and television. 30% of users chose this combination. The second combination was fixed-line telephony + fixed-line Internet + television. Its market share was 18.8% in terms of the number of subscribers. The third most popular package was mobile telephony and mobile Internet. More than 15% of the users purchased this bundle.
