World Telecommunication and Information Society Day

2016-05-16
Światowy Dzień Społeczeństwa Informacyjnego
Under a resolution of the UNO General Assembly, 17 May is celebrated as the World Telecommunications and Information Society Day. On that day in 1865 the International Telecommunication Union was established in Paris.

ITU had only 20 member states at that time. Today it brings together 193 countries and 661 sector members, i.e. companies active in the telecommunications and radiocommunication markets. Poland has been a member of the International Telecommunications Union since 1921.

This year's theme of the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is "ICT entrepreneurship for social impact".  Special focus will be on innovative areas of ICT development. As in previous years, the events making this year's World Telecommunication and Information Society Day aim at promoting the concept of information society. Public debates, seminars, conferences, promotional and educational events or contests are planned. Most of the events will be open to the public.

The theme of the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is consistent with the initiative of the ITU Secretary-General Houlin Zhao to support small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), start-ups and technology hubs. Houlin Zhao calls for using ICT as a driver for sustainable development which boosts economic growth, social integration, connectivity and supports the establishment of comprehensive entrepreneurial ecosystems as well as assists entrepreneurs in moving from idea and innovation to sales and revenue.

This year the Grand Gala of the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day will be combined with the celebrations of the 35th anniversary of the Polish Information Processing Society which has initiated IT events in Poland for many years.

Details about celebrations of the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day are available on the website of the Organization and Programme Committee.
